5 Ways to Get Picky Children to Eat
By Kevin Andersen
What parent hasn’t had a run in with a picky child? It’s enough to make you give up cooking for them, but fortunately, there are techniques to help your child eat better. First of all, you need to realize that your kids are probably going through a phase. If your picky eater is 6 or under, he or she is probably seeing just where the line is drawn. Even kids who ate everything before can turn extremely picky around 3 or 4 years of age. It’s a power thing. They’re seeing if they have the right to choose their food or not. A power struggle rarely goes to the parent when it comes to food. Kids are very good at holding out and they can vomit on command, so it might not be a good idea to go there. The ideal way to help your picky eater get past the power thing is to simply ignore it. Don’t fight, just eat and enjoy your mealtimes, even if it’s driving you crazy that your child isn’t touching their food. Associating meals with pleasant family time is an excellent way to make food more appealing. Without further ado, here are five more ways to get your picky child eating. 1. Present the food regularly. Jamie Oliver admits that his children don’t eat some foods, so his technique is to put it out anyway. By placing broccoli on the table or even on your child’s plate each meal time, but not insisting they eat it, you help them become familiar with the shape and taste. 2. Don’t give them food you wouldn’t eat. If you don’t like it, chances are your child will shun the same thing. They pick up on things you dislike and while their tastes will change in time, for now they will follow your lead, so stick to foods you can honestly rave about. 3. Make it fun. Calling broccoli “dino trees” really does make a difference. A recent study proved that kids were more interested in eating their vegetables if they had fun names. So, get creative! 4. Reserve it for yourself. A great way to get small children interested in a new food is to only serve it for yourself. They will want to know what you’re eating and will soon stop at nothing, especially if you warn them that it’s “grown up food” or “special Mommy food”. Let them eat it off your plate and think they’re getting a good deal! 5. Have a one taste rule. Let your child refuse food, but first they have to taste it. This applies every single time you have a meal with that food in it and works best if you have a child refusing a particular food or a particular color of food. Kids usually need to taste something 15+ times before they actually accept it. Keep in mind that your child’s tastes are constantly evolving and chances are they’ll like foods later that they detest right now. You should also consider that there might be some food that your child really can’t stomach. If they are constantly switching their likes and dislikes, but never want to eat onions, let it be . . . after all, you probably don’t like all foods either!
